William L. Sorg

William Loren Sorg, 72, of Hastings, MN passed away on December 28, 2020. Bill was born in Hastings to Loren and Marion (Lambrecht) Sorg. He was raised on the Sorg Family Farm and graduated from Hastings High School in 1966. Bill went on to attend the University of Minnesota College of Agriculture. While there, he was active on campus as a member of Delta Theta Sigma Fraternity where he made lifelong friends and was a Gopher sports fanatic. Upon graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Economics in 1970, he returned home to the family farm as the fourth generation. He strived to increase the acreage and livestock capacity to create a sustainable farm for future generations. His friendships from his college years played a huge role in his successes with this, and he was forever grateful to them. On November 25, 1989 at Hastings United Methodist Church, Bill married the love of his life Juanita Trout, and they raised three children. He was blessed and proud that his children shared his love of agriculture and all pursued careers in the industry. Bill’s vocation and avocation was farming. As a young man, he enjoyed his time in saddle club, was a member of the Klover Klub 4-H club (40+ years before his children), and was active in Hastings FFA ultimately becoming a Minnesota State FFA officer. Bill was an avid dairy farmer spending well over 40 years milking his cows twice a day. Yet, he always made time to attend his children’s important events. Throughout his life, he actively studied farm journals, magazines, and auction listings and shared his learnings and findings with the many people that entered his home. He demonstrated and contributed his knowledge to the agricultural community by serving on cooperative boards and advocating for agriculture in the legislature through Minnesota Farmers Union. In his “retirement” years, his favorite daily activities included making hay, tending his beef cows, and trapping gophers with his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Juanita; his children, Karl (Kayla) Sorg, Janna (Eric) Bauer, and Gabriella (fiance', Eric Houdek) Sorg all of Hastings; grandchildren, Levi and Liam Sorg; and Henry Bauer. He is also survived by two of his siblings, Mary Lou (Roger) Foster, and Randy (Kelly) Sorg; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Gary. A memorial gathering will be held on Tuesday, January 5, 2021 from 10:00 am - 12 noon at Starkson Family Life Celebration Chapel, 3075 Vermillion Street, Hastings. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, January 5, 2021 at 2:00 pm at Resurrection United Methodist Church, 615 W. 15th St., Hastings. The funeral will also be live-streamed via Resurrection's Facebook or YouTube channel. Social distancing and masks will be required at both events. The Starkson Family Life Celebration Chapel is serving the family.
