Walter C. Holmgren

Walter C. Holmgren, age 89, formerly of Minneapolis and St. Paul, MN passed away Friday, July 10, 2009 at Augustana Health Care Center in Hastings.Walter was born July 8, 1920. He served in the 3rd Army Div. under General Patton as a squad leader in a motor division (infantry) in the African, European, and Middle Eastern areas from 1942 to 1946 during WWII. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1980.Walter was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Sina of Norway and Sweden; brothers Roy and Dick of Minneapolis, and wife, Agnes (Peggy) of St. Paul.Walter is survived by sons Gary (Hammer) of Hastings and Dennis of Minneapolis; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchldren.He was a hero in war and also in life, from the greatest generation of time. Walter will be missed so much and will always be with us.His funeral service and honor guard were at held 10:30 A.M. Monday, July 20, 2009 at the Ft. Snelling National Cemetery.
