Thomas "Tom" Schmitz, age 90, longtime Hastings resident passed away on May 9, 2016. He was the last surviving World War II Marine Corps Veteran from Hastings. Tom served in the Battle of Okinawa and then in North China. He was a member of the Hastings VFW Lyle Russell Post 1210. Tom worked for Peavey Flour Mill, Koch Refinery and then for Metro Waste until retirement. Hunting, fishing, and artwork were his passions. He graduated from Hastings High School in 1947, was class president, and was an avid Alumni member. Tom was preceded in death by his parents; son, Mych; and grandson, Baby Will Kaiser. Tom is survived by his wife, Beverly (Weber); his children, Kris, Kerry Thomas and Jaci (Fuchs), Mark, Timothy and Toots (Hankes) and Amie and Tony Kaiser; grandchildren, Amber, Dana (Dustin Schluesser), Jill, Timmy, Andy (Natalie Schorn) Casey, Ben and Evan; great-grandchildren, Maddyn, Archer, Colton, Lucy, Beckham and Scarlett. SEMPER FI, Dad! Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 20, 2016 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 2035 West Fifteenth Street in Hastings. Visitation will be held at the church one hour prior to the Mass. Grandchildren Honorary Urn Bearers areAmber Schmitz, Timmy Schmitz, Dana Schluessler, Ben Kaiser and Evan Kaiser. Graveside Military Honors were provided by the Hastings VFW Lyle Russell Post #1210.
