Sylvester "Vess" J. Denn

Sylvester "Vess" Denn, age 98 of Hastings, MN died peacefully on March 23, 2017 at Regina Medical Center, Hastings, following complications from pneumonia. Sylvester Jacob, the son of John and Margaret (Weiler) Denn, was born April 2, 1918 in Hastings, MN. He was united in marriage to Dorothy Mae Hamilton on May 2, 1942. He served in the US Army in the South Pacific during World War II. On returning he was a bricklayer by trade and a master of building fireplaces in Hastings and the surrounding area. He had a passion for hunting, fishing and gardening. Over the years, he shared his harvest with many family and friends. Vess was a member of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, Lyle Russell VFW Post 1210 and American Legion Post 47 for many years. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Dorothy; children Paul, John and Sharon, granddaughter, Kelly Jo, son-in-law Tom Carnel and many brothers and sisters. Vess is survived by his dear friend Mary Radke; children Anita (Mitzi) Carnel (Earl), Mari (Terry) Kincaid, Lori Stone and Cherie (Jeff) Adelman; 16 grand-children; 37 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 29, 2017, at Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, Hastings, MN. Visitation will be held at the church two hours prior to the Mass. Interment with Military Honors provided by VFW Lyle Russell Post 1210 will follow at the parish cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Vesss family request memorials made to Hastings Veterans Home, 1200 18th St. E., Hastings, MN. Arrangements are being completed by the Caturia-Smidt Funeral Home Cremation Services of Hastings.
