Russell "Russ" I. Hanson

Russell I. "Russ" Hanson, age 83, of Hastings, passed away May 9, 2021. He was born in Albert Lea, MN on October 5, 1937 to Irvin and Florence Hanson. Russ married Patricia Jensen on June 29, 1968 in Litchfield, MN. He taught mathematics for 31 years at Rochester Community and Technical College and formed deep bonds with his colleagues and students. In his free time he enjoyed acting in community theater. Russ was an avid cyclist and happiest when he was on his bike. He also loved spending time at his condo on the North Shore with his family, hosting family gatherings and playing bridge with his friends. Russ loved spending time with his grandkids, introduced them to biking and was their biggest fan. He will be remembered as a good natured person with a big heart and a big smile. He was preceded in death by his parents; and sisters, Charlotte Johnsrud and Donna Heilman. Russ is survived by his wife, Pat; children, Amy (Matt) Anderson, Matthew Hanson (Beckie Schmitz) and Trea (Eric) Wahlstrom; grandchildren, Bennett and Eleanor Anderson, Jacob and Maya Hanson, Spencer and Noah Wahlstrom; brother in law, Joe (Bonnie) Jensen; nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, May 13, 2021 at 11:00 AM at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 920 Holley Ave. in St. Paul Park. The Mass will be live-streamed on Starkson Family Life Celebration Chapel's facebook. gathering will be held one hour prior to mass at church. We do ask those in attendance to wear masks and respect social distancing guidelines. Memorials preferred in lieu of flowers to Habit for Humanity.
