Robert E. Cater

Robert E. Cater, age 95, of Hastings died June 11, 2011 at his residence. Robert was born April 2, 1916 in Lake City to Harry and Alice (Merkins) Cater. He was united in marriage to Lorraine Pechacek on November 26, 1938 in Hastings. Robert was an avid hunter and fisherman, volunteered with Red Cross and was founder of the Dakota County Water Patrol. He attended Lake City and Red Wing schools and moved to Hastings in 1935. Robert retired from 3M in Cottage Grove after 31 years of employment. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter Ruth Ann Dorschner; son-in-law Larry; and 7 siblings. Robert is survived by his wife Lorraine; sons Lyle (Sarah) Cater of Navarre Beach, Florida and Gary (Mary) Cater of Hastings; grandchildren Robin Frerich, John Cater, Jill Knott, Tom Cater, Dan Cater, Jaymie Cater, Tonya Brake, Rob Shingledecker and Rhonda Nielsen; 22 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; and sister Marion Meyer of Farmington. The funeral service, officiated by Rev. Christopher Kneen will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 17 at United Methodist Church, 615Fifteenth St. W., Hastings. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, June 16 at Caturia-Smidt Funeral Home, 201 E.Seventh St., Hastings and one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Lakeside Cemetery. Robert�s grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.
