Raymond "Ray" Chapin, age 77 of Etter, died peacefully on Sunday, August 21, 2016 at Our Lady of Peace Hospice in St. Paul. Raymond John, the son of Melvin and Esther (Olson) Chapin, was born on February 17, 1939 in Pine City, Minnesota. Following his graduation from Prescott High School, Ray was united in marriage to Mary Turnbull on August 12, 1958 in Hastings. He was a longtime member of the local 49 union and worked as an engineer on J.L. Shiely barges and most recently was a heavy equipment operator. Ray loved his tractors and was very active with the Credit River Antique Tractor Club. He never missed a Thursday auction in Cannon, often bringing home equipment to add to his collection. Ray was also a longtime and dedicated member of Our Saviours Ev. Lutheran Church in Cannon Falls, where he served many terms on the board and also helped build the church. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother-in-law, Larry McCarten; and most recently by his sister, Carol Chapin. Ray is survived by his wife, Mary of Etter; his children, Butch (Lisa) Chapin, David Chapin, Ken (Sharon) Chapin and Ron Chapin; his many grandchildren and great grandchildren; his siblings, Roger (Sally) Chapin of Fernley, NV, Kathy McCarten of Coral Springs, FL, and Linnea (David) Pollichetti of Haley, ID; and by many nieces, nephews other relatives and friends. Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, August 27, 2016 at Our Saviours Ev. Lutheran Church, 30370 Hardwood Way, Cannon Falls, with Pastor Tim Banks officiating. Interment will be held at Lakeside Cemetery, Hastings. Visitation will be held 4-8 p.m. Friday at Caturia-Smidt Funeral Home Cremation Services, Hastings, and will continue for one hour prior to the services Saturday morning at church.
