Norbert J. Hoffman, age 87, of Hastings and formerly New Trier, died peacefully on Saturday, September 26, 2015 at Regina Medical Center, Hastings. Norbert J., the son of Peter and Anna (Langenfeld) Hoffman, was born on June 12, 1928 in Hampton. Following his graduation from Nazareth High School, Norbert entered the St. Paul Seminary where he studied for two years. He later enlisted in the U.S. Air Force where he was stationed in Japan during the Korean War. Following his honorable discharge, Norbert returned home and was united in marriage to Mary Kay Siebenaler on June 29, 1957 at St. Marys Catholic Church. Norbert began his life-long career at Koch Refineries where he later retired after many years of service. Throughout his life Norbert was active in many involvements. Sports brought him great joy, particularly baseball. Norbert played catcher for the Cannon Falls Bears in the late-40s. He also coached many baseball teams in the area. Norbert enjoyed singing at Church. He was known for his ability to sing the Gregorian Chant of the Latin Mass. Norbert also labored many years raising cattle on a "hobby" farm in Douglas Township. Norbert was actively involved in the St. Nicholas Society, the Knights of Columbus and St. Marys Catholic Church where he served as trustee for many years. He was preceded in death by his parents; and by his ten siblings, Joseph, Bertha Huss, Irene Schanno, Martha Synder, Francis, Emma Gumatz, Marie Turek, Carl, Bill, and Rose Anne Powers. Norbert is survived by his wife, Mary Kay of Hastings; his children, Sharon (Greg) Endres, Paul Hoffman, Jaci (Dan) Gergen, Pete Hoffman, Joe (Kristy) Hoffman, Yvonne (Tom) Latuff, David (Shelly) Hoffman and Douglas Hoffman; his thirteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; his sister-in-law, Mary Hoffman of Cannon Falls; and by many other relatives and friends. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 1, 2015 at St. Marys Catholic Church in New Trier, with Fr. Cole Kracke, Fr. Martin Siebenaler Fr. Leonard Siebenaler officiating. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be held at Caturia-Smidt Funeral Home Cremation Services, 201 East 7th St., Hastings on Wednesday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. with a Rosary conducted by the Knights of Columbus at 7:30 p.m. and also for one hour prior to services at church on Thursday.
