Melvin L. Giefer, age 91 of Hastings, died June 24, 2011 at United Hospital in St. Paul.Melvin was born October 3, 1919 in Hampton to William and Anna (Reinardy) Giefer. He was united in marriage to Carole Holliday on December 23, 1944 in Salinas, California.He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Dolores Larson, and Evelyn Sabo. Melvin is survived by his wife Carole; children James (Sandra) Giefer of Woodbury, Muriel Haglind of Shorewood, and Melva Hill of Anthem, Arizona; 6 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; siblings Mildred Rother of Hastings, Edna Wikstrom of Montana, William "Bill" Giefer of Cottage Grove, and Donald "Don" Giefer of Hemet, California.The Memorial Mass will be held at10:30AM Wednesday, July 6, 2011 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 2035 West Fifteenth Street, Hastings, with a gathering one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. The family requests thatno flowers be sent.
