Mary M. Thurmes, a lifelong resident of Denmark Township passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 18, 2016 at the Prescott Nursing Rehab Center in Prescott at a ripe young age of 101. Mary Margaret was born on the family farm in Washington Countys Denmark Township on August 17, 1915 to Oliver and Margaret (OConnor) Frost. She graduated from Hastings High School in 1933 and also from St. Cloud Teachers College in 1937. She married Henry Thurmes on February 3, 1942 at Annunciation Church in Minneapolis, officiated by her Godfather, Father Lang. Mary taught school in a one room school house in Lake Elmo and also at many area schools. She had also worked as an early phone operator in Cottage Grove. Mary loved being outdoors doing anything, rather than being "cooped up in the house"! She loved playing cards (500, Euchre, Cribbage), baking and cross-stitching. She was preceded in death by her parents; sons, Tony and Ron; an infant daughter, Nancy; and husband Henry. Mary was most proud of her seven children, four remaining, James (Mary) Thurmes of Cloquet, MN, Peggy (Jeff) Rother, Raymond (Denise) Thurmes and Dennis (Christie) Thurmes, also daughter in law, Brenda Thurmes, all of Hastings; her 16 grandchildren, Jim, Tim, Tammy, Tracy, Jerry, John, Bill, Joe, Al, Ben, Clint, Crystal, Jess, Kody, Caleb and Tyler; her 20 great grandchildren, Jason, Chelsea, Joshua, Jacob, Andrew, Michael, Logan, Taylor, Tori, Madison, Dustin, Logan, Hannah, Renae, Julia, April, Danielle, Ryder, Brittany and Ashley; also four great-great grandchildren, Allyson, Cali Jo, Stan Lee and Carter; sister in law, Eleanor Thurmes; and by other relatives and friends. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. Friday, September 23, 2016 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 2035 Fifteenth Street West, Hastings with Fr. David Hennen officiating. Visitation will be held after 9 a.m. Friday at the church. Interment will be held in the parish cemetery. Arrangements are being completed by Caturia-Smidt Funeral Home Cremation Services in Hastings.
