Mary Rose Gaughan, age 87, of Welch, Minnesota, passed peacefully on June 5, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family.
Mary was born on July 3, 1938, in Avon, Minnesota, to Oliver and Marie Counter. She grew up with a strong sense of compassion and dedication to others, qualities that guided her throughout her life.
A Registered Nurse by profession, Mary devoted many years to caring for residents in nursing homes. Her kindness, patience, and gentle spirit touched countless lives, and she found great fulfillment in helping others during their times of need.
Outside of her nursing career, Mary’s greatest passion was her flowers. Her gardens were a source of pride and joy, and she could often be found spending hours weeding, watering, and tending to her beautiful blooms. Through her gardens, she created beauty that reflected the warmth and care she shared with everyone around her.
Mary is lovingly survived by her children: Tim Sr., Theresa, Janice (Alan), David Jr., and Mary Ellen (Craig); her grandchildren: Justin (Laura), Jelayna (Jonathan), Brandi (Jason), Tim Jr. (Marie), Brooke (Darren), Alea (Jim), Jaidyn (Hunter), and Kaitlyn (Jake); Her great-grandchildren: Jordan, Avery, Elena, Vinny, Mia, Camden, Hudson, Savanah, Leyland, Peyton and Brynlee; and her brother, James (Marilyn) Counter; Godchild, Dale Counter; along with many cherished nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband, David Gaughan, Sr.; her parents, Oliver and Marie Counter; brothers, Louis and Oliver; and sister, Anna.
Mary’s legacy of compassion, hard work, and love for family will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.
A private family interment will take place at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. A celebration of Mary’s life will take place at a later date.
