Marshall Shapiro

December 21, 1929 — February 16, 2018

Marshall Shapiro, age 88 of Hastings, died peacefully on Friday morning, February 16, 2018, at the Minnesota Veterans Home Minneapolis. Marshall, the son of Albert and Mae (Yanovitz) Shapiro, was born on December 21, 1929, in Boston, Massachusetts. Following his graduation from Boston English High School with the class of 1947, he attended the Berklee School of Music in Boston. Marshall was drafted into the United States Army and was later granted an honorable discharge. Music has been a part of Marshalls entire life, and he never passed up a chance to play at various venues. On September 28, 1975, Marshall was united in marriage to Doris Pechacek in Bloomington; they recently celebrated 42 wonderful years of marriage. Marshall began working for his father at ARO Manufacturing where they manufactured convertible tops prior to a life-long career in sales and marketing for the food industry. During retirement, Marshall also enjoyed working in the Probation Department for Dakota County as well. He was preceded in death by his parents; and by his siblings, George, Harold, and Sydney Shapiro. Marshall is survived by his wife, Doris; children, Amy (Kevin) Angert, Laurie Madenfort, Deborah (Garfield) Gilchrist, Renee (Steven) Whiteis, Shawn (John) Kimmes, and Zane Langenfeld; grandchildren, Allison Miller, Calen Angert, Taylor Madenfort, Justin Gilchrist, Cole Whiteis, Zachary Whiteis, Noah Whiteis, Jacob Kimmes, Sarah Kimmes, and Kayla Langenfeld; five great grandchildren; a special nephew, Neil (Susie) Shapiro; and by many other relatives and friends. A Celebration of Marshalls Life will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 24, 2018, at Caturia, Smidt Starkson Funeral Home Crematory of Hastings. Interment with Military Honors provided by the Hastings VFW Lyle Russell Post 1210 will follow at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., and a reception will follow the graveside service, all at the funeral home on Saturday. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Minneapolis Veterans Home Family Council, the Minnesota Braille and Talking Book Library, or to the donors choice in memory of Marshall. Arrangements are being completed by Caturia, Smidt Starkson Funeral Home Crematory of Hastings.
