Marilyn S. Schommer, age 90 of Hastings, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family on Thursday evening, January 27, 2022. Marilyn, our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, and friend, you are home. We pray you may rest in the arms of our Saviour for eternity. Marilyn Shirley, the daughter of George and Alvina (Peine) Burr, was born on May 31, 1931, at the family farm in rural Hampton. She graduated fourth in her class at Hastings High School in 1949. Marilyn was joined in Holy Matrimony to William Schommer on June 2, 1951, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Hastings. They were blessed with five children, fifteen grandchildren, thirty-seven great grandchildren, and seventy wonderful years of marriage. Following her graduation, Marilyn worked at Anchor Paper in St. Paul. She was also the secretary at Guardian Angels for many years, but her favorite job was teaching Title One at St. Boniface Catholic School. She excelled at this vocation because she was truly a teacher at heart, patient and kind as she understood each child was able to learn but they all might learn differently. Marilyn was truly an integral part of many student's achievements. Marilyn was tremendously devoted to her family and all of her loved ones can share stories of her wisdom and grace. She never wanted to miss any of her grandchildren or great grandchildren's activities because she was so proud of each and every one of them. Marilyn had a beautiful servant's heart, and was a dedicated volunteer in her church and the Hastings community. Marilyn taught us to walk in the footsteps of Jesus; may we always remember to follow her example. She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, George Burr, Janet Waldbillig, Helen Schoen, and Eileen Schommer; brothers-in-law, Al Waldbillig, John Haberkorn, Mike Schoen, and Ray Schommer; and by her daughter-in-law, Patti Schommer. Marilyn is survived by her loving husband, Bill; children, Julie (Kelly) Orth, William (Martha) Schommer, Marian (Ken) Hausladen, Mark Schommer, and Sharon (Mark) Blatzheim; fifteen grandchildren, Amy (Jeff) Hammer, Gina (Dominic) Wareham, Michael (Jen) Orth, Maria (Brian) Thorstad, Nicholas (Amanda) Schommer, Juliet (John) Leonard, Emily (Isaac) Kendall, Paul (friend, Angelica) Hausladen, Jillian (Ryan) Hendrickson, Meghan (Brad) Lawinger, Katlyn (Jake) Haws, Patrick (Maria) Schommer, William (Kristin) Blatzheim, Bridget (Jon) Hauff, and Brianna (Adam) Kunkel; thirty-seven great grandchildren; sisters, Luverne Haberkorn and Sr. Georganne Burr, OSB; sisters-in-law, Sara Burr, Mildred Hovde, Rita Fasbender, Joan Jacobson, Ruth Schommer, Shirley Schommer, Sandy Schommer, and Darlene Schommer; brothers-in-law, Bob Schommer and Ed Temmers; and by many other relatives and friends. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 1, 2022, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Hastings, with Father David Hennen officiating. Interment will follow at the parish cemetery. Family and friends are cordially invited to a visitation from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Monday evening at Starkson Family Life Celebration Chapel of Hastings, and also for one hour prior to Mass at church on Tuesday. A reception will follow the graveside service at the church.
