Margie Swanson

Margie Swanson, age 96, of Huntley, Illinois, passed away peacefully on August 13, 2026, at Benedictine Living Community in Hastings, Minnesota.

Margie was born on July 11, 1930, in Chicago, Illinois, to John and Marge (Seneke) Bartell. She was raised in Chicago as the youngest of three children, growing up with her two older brothers, John and Henry. Following high school, Margie attended Bradley University, where she earned her degree.

Margie met Sten Swanson, and the two were married in September of 1954. Together, they made their home in the Chicago suburbs, where they raised their two children, Debbie and Scott. Margie and Sten shared 54 years of marriage until his passing on December 2, 2008.

After starting her family, Margie returned to school to earn her teaching certificate. She went on to work for many years as an elementary and middle school art teacher in Northbrook and Wauconda. She enjoyed sharing her creativity with her students and dedicated many years to education.

When her children were in their teens, the family lived on the lake in Wauconda, where Margie especially enjoyed spending time on the boat. She also loved golfing and tap dancing, a hobby she remarkably continued until around the age of 90.

Margie was fun, outgoing, and social and never wanted to miss a party. Above all, she loved her family. She was especially proud of her four grandchildren and was always supportive of them, attending countless sporting events and other activities throughout the years. Her family remained an important part of her life, and she treasured the time she spent with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and extended family.

Margie is survived by her children, Debbie (Larry) Freck and Scott (Lori) Swanson; grandchildren, Andy (Ashley) Freck, Sara (Chad) Weber, Julia (Derek) Roush, and Christian (Ashley) Swanson; ten great-grandchildren, with another great-grandchild on the way; as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Sten Swanson; her parents, John and Marge Bartell; and her brothers, John and Henry.

A Requiem Mass will be held at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 23955 Nicolai Avenue East, Miesville, Minnesota. A light reception will follow the Mass at the church. Burial will take place at a later date.
