Loretta Qualls Arnold

Loretta Q. Arnold, age 77, of Hastings, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 21, 2025, at United Hospital in St. Paul.

Loretta was born on January 29, 1948, in Jonesville, Louisiana, to Hurshel and Loretta (McIntyre) Qualls. She was one of five children raised in a small Louisiana town and graduated from Newellton High School. She went on to attend Louisiana State University and remained proud of her Southern roots throughout her life.

In 1981, Loretta married her high school friend, Harold Garner, and together they had two children. The family made their home in Louisiana until Harold’s passing. Loretta later moved to Mississippi, where she spent 20 years living with her sisters. She devoted 45 years to nursing as an LPN, beginning her career in the emergency room before transitioning to nursing home care, where she was known for her skill and compassion.

Following the passing of most of her sisters, Loretta moved to Hastings, Minnesota, to be with her daughter and grandchildren. She embraced her role as “Nanny” to Skylar and Ayden, a name they lovingly gave her. She was a steady and loving presence in their lives—always available to listen, talk, and support them in all things.

Loretta had a generous spirit and a heart full of warmth. She loved gardening, cooking (and was a great cook), crocheting, and cheering on her beloved New Orleans Saints. She cherished long phone calls with her remaining sister, and often told the story of the time she met Morgan Freeman at the VA in Jackson, Mississippi.

She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth (Stephen) Ducrest; her grandchildren, Skylar and Ayden Ducrest; her sister, Laredda Qualls; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harold Garner; and siblings, Nelton Qualls, Glenda Qualls, and Donna Earwood.
