Laurie A. Lorentz (Kendall), age 70 of Hastings, passed away suddenly but peacefully at her winter home (her happy place) in Zephyrhills, Florida on Friday, March 27, 2026.
Laurie was born on September 8, 1955, in Lake City, Minnesota, to Lloyd William Kendall and Joan Lois Kendall (Hattemer). She graduated with the Class of 1973 from Hastings High School, where she met her future husband, Stephen Lorentz. The two were married on November 16, 1974.
Following their marriage, they moved to Noblesville, Indiana, where she worked as a secretary for a mobile home park and later for Fred’s Frozen Foods. The couple eventually returned to Hastings, Minnesota, where Laurie began working as an optician at Rivertown Eye Clinic. In 1991, she fulfilled her favorite role as a mother, by adopting twin boys from Honduras.
She spent 17 years with JHL Construction as a secretary before continuing in that role at Majeski Plumbing. During that time, she also began working at the Trophy House in 1999, assisting with kitchen and catering duties, where she remained until her retirement in 2022.
Laurie loved being a mother and Mimi, and her relationships with her children, grandchildren, and family meant the world to her. She had a gift for connecting with others and made friends easily. She enjoyed socializing, playing cards and board games, organizing euchre tournaments in the Garage-Mahal (Dad’s 3 car garage) and sharing meals with friends---particularly her “volley girls,” with whom she maintained close friendships for more than 40 years, continuing their tradition of Wednesday night dinners. Her faith was very important to her, and she spent much of her time in prayer and worship of Jesus. In the final years of her life, she treasured time with her husband and friends at their winter home in Florida. She loved the Florida weather and often described it as her “happy place,” and she especially enjoyed reminding family and friends about the differences in weather—specifically the snowfall and lack thereof in Florida.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Lloyd and Joan; sisters-in-law Virginia "Ginny: Johnston and Theresa Lorentz; and brother-in-law, George Marthaler.
Laurie is survived by her husband of 51 years, Stephen; her sons, Jacob (Ashleigh) and Lucas (Georgia); and her siblings, Keith (Lisa), Kathy (Craig Parris), and Bill (Cindy). She is also survived by her grandchildren: Isabella, Liam, and Aspen, children of Jacob and Ashleigh; and Kendall, Karson, Kaedyn, and Kamryn, the children of Lucas and his former wife, Lauren; and by many nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends.
