Katherine "Katy" Schmitt

Katherine E. "Katy" Schmitt, age 89 of Hastings died unexpectedly on Tuesday, August 30, 2016 at United Hospital in St. Paul. Katherine Elaine was born November 12, 1926 in Hastings to Karl and Ella (Tofstad) Hansen. She was a 1944 graduate of Hastings High School and married Lloyd J. Schmitt on June 25, 1947 in Hastings. Katy was formerly employed with Smead Manufacturing. She loved cookie baking and continued to bake cookies daily for everyone she knew. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lloyd; brothers, John Stanley Hansen and Arel Hansen; great grandson, Casey Schluessler. Katy is survived by her four children, Gary "Bud" (Carol) Schmitt of Hastings, Karen Schmitt of Hastings, Donna (Mark) Marty of St. Paul Park and Joanie (Gary) Moore of Hastings; 12 grandchildren, Chris (Liz) Schmitt, Aubrey (Edie) Boyer, Mandy Schmitt, Bonnie (Wade) Kolb, Barbi (Randy) Schluessler, Lori (Sean) Herman, Justin (Robyn) Gelhar, Amy (Jeff) Sieben, Katie (Jamie) Klug, Kelly (Mike) Birkenmayer, Tony Fazio and Angie (Alex) Fazio; also 20 great grandchildren, Ian, Evie, Alex, Delton, Cassidy, Grant, Zach, Aren, Devin, Kayla, Max, Amalia, Ben, Luke, Emmett, Lainey, James, Ryan, Sean and Maddie; and four great great grandchildren, Carter, Taylor, Rylann and Gavin. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 AM Saturday, September 3, 2016 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 2035 West Fifteenth Street in Hastings, with Father T.J. McKenzie officiating. Visitation will be held at church from 9:00 AM until time of service. Interment will follow in Lakeside Cemetery, Hastings.
