Joseph R. "Joe" Marthaler, age 90 of Rosemount, died suddenly but peacefully on Tuesday evening, December 22, 2020, at Augustana Care of Hastings. Joe now gets to spend Christmas in Heaven with his wife, Jeannette, who recently passed away on August 17, 2020. Joseph Robert, the son of Joseph A. and Theresa (Blaeser) Marthaler, was born on July 15, 1930, in West St. Paul. Following his education, Joe was united in marriage to Jeannette L. Michaud on August 2, 1952, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in St. Paul. Joe was a longtime farmer in rural Rosemount with his father and brothers. Joe was a dedicated husband and father who did anything to take care of his family. He enjoyed coaching 4-H softball when the boys were young, wintering in Mesa, Arizona with Jeannette, and was a talented card player with the card clubs in both Vermillion and Coates. Joe also enjoyed golfing, watching his grandchildren show cattle, and was a longtime member of St. Agatha's Catholic Church in Coates. He was preceded in death by his parents and by his wife of 68 years, Jeannette. Joe is survived by his sons, Robert J. (Mary Langevin) Marthaler, Richard J. (Jan) Marthaler, Stephen J. (Jeanne) Marthaler, Timothy J. (Jo) Marthaler, and Joseph J. (Melanie) Marthaler; nineteen grandchildren and twenty-four great grandchildren with another great granddaughter due very soon; siblings, Mary (Marschall) McDonough, Raymond (Betty) Marthaler, Donald (Marlys) Marthaler, and JoAnne (John) Southworth; and by many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 29, 2020, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Vermillion. Interment will be held at St. Agatha's Cemetery near Coates. Due to Covid-19 requirements, Joe's family requests all guests to wear mask and respect social distancing recommendations. Family and friends are cordially invited to a visitation from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the church on Tuesday morning. In lieu of flowers, Joe's family requests memorials be given to the donor's choice in his memory. Arrangements are being completed by Starkson Family Life Celebration Chapel of Hastings.
