John V. Shima passed away at the age of 84 on September 17, 2009.John, the son of John W. and Rose (Havel) Shima, was born October 26, 1924, in Montgomery, Minnesota. He was raised and attended Montgomery High School. He served in the United States Navy during WW II in the Pacific Theater from 1941-1945. His marriage to Beatrice DuPont took place on July 5, 1947, in Chaska Minnesota. After their marriage the couple moved to Fargo, North Dakota where he attended North Dakota State University and completed his pharmacy degree. They moved to Sauk Center, Minnesota, and John worked for Bushy's Drug Store. In 1954 he and his wife moved to Hastings, Minnesota, and purchased Heinz Drug Store and it became Shima's Hastings Drug Store. The family operated the drug store until 1972. After selling the store John worked for Snyder's Drug and Walgreens. John was a devoted husband and loving father, grandfather, and great grandfather. The family spent many summer weekends at their Bass Lake cabin and enjoyed traveling. After retirement John and Bea usually spent winters in Florida. He and his wife loved cooking and entertaining family, their homemakers and bridge groups. John was a long-time member of St. Boniface Catholic Church and then St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church. He was an avid Minnesota Twins and Vikings supporter and could always be called upon to know the scores and details of any of their games. He was preceded in death by his wife, Beatrice; his parents, John and Rose Shima; brothers, Raymond; Stanley; George; Eugene; one sister, Margie (Margaret); one daughter-in -law, Irene Shima and one granddaughter, Anne Shima. John V. Shima is survived by his three sons: Noel Shima and his wife Nancy of Juneau, Alaska; Jeff Shima and his wife Leona of Allison, Iowa; and John V. Shima III and his wife Martha of Forest Lake, Minnesota; one sister, Evie Bizdecheck; grandchildren, Jason Shima of Juneau, Alaska; Carissa Shima of Waterloo, Iowa; Alyssa Shima of Las Vegas, Nevada; Jesse Shima of Wisconsin; John V. Shima IV of Minneapolis, Minnesota; and Jackie Holl of Minneapolis, Minnesota. He has two great grandchildren, John V. Shima V and Madalyn Stroman. John will be missed by his sons, their families, and many friends and neighbors in the Hastings area.Mass of Christian Burial, officiated by Fr. Jim Perkl, Tuesday (9/22), 9:30 am, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 2035 W. 15th St., Hastings. Visitation will be held 1 hour prior to mass at church.
