Age 80, of Burnsville. Passed away on June 27, 2016. Preceded by parents; brothers, Gil & David. Survived by loving wife, Kathy; children, Jeffrey, Jason & Joleen (VJ) Rodriguez; grandchildren, Luke, Hanna, Zander, Ashton & Anika; brother, Paul (Pam); many nieces, nephews, other relatives & friends. John enlisted in the Navy when he was 17 and served for 8 years, retiring as Lieutenant. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin Madison with a B.S. in political science. He started his career as a planner for the City of Bloomington. Then he created Urban Planning & Design, where he provided consulting services to the cities of Apple Valley, Eagan and Inver Grove Heights from 1968-1983. Subsequently, he served 2 terms as Dakota County Commissioner and was responsible for the building of the Western Government Center in Apple Valley in addition to developing parks and trails in Dakota County. John was an avid horseman from the opening of Canterbury Downs to the present. John and Kathy developed and owned AmericInn Hotels in Apple Valley and Inver Grove Heights, along with Old Chicago Restaurant & Conference Center also in Apple Valley. From 1996 on John and Kathy wintered in Goodyear, Arizona where they enjoyed golfing and playing bocce ball. They also enjoyed boating on the St. Croix River and MN lakes. Memorial Service 1:00 PM on July 7, 2016 at Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel, 200 Tower Ave., St. Paul (then follow signs to the chapel), with visitation one hour prior. Inurnment Fort Snelling National Cemetery at 10:30 AM on July 8, assembly lane #4. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred.
