John C. Zgoda

John C. Zgoda, age 53 of Hastings died January 10, 2012 in Ft. Myers, FL, following a short but courageous battle with cancer. John was born March 31, 1958 in Hendricks, MN to Arthur and Dorothy (Dass) Zgoda. He married Julie Thomas on February 9, 1979 at Our Saviour�s Ev. Lutheran Church in Hastings. John was a devoted, life-long employee of the City of Hastings, where he worked as a superintendent with the public works department. He was a dedicated and active member of the Sons of American Legion at the district, state and national levels. John was an avid outdoorsman, liked to golf, was a devoted family man who enjoyed watching his kids and grandkids participate in various activities. He was preceded in death by his parents; uncle Arnold �Buzz�, and mother-in-law Verneil Thomas. John is survived by his wife Julie; children Dawn (Brian Tucker) Zgoda of Red Wing, Jim (Tara) Zgoda of Hastings, and Dan (Candace) Zgoda of Hastings; three grandchildren Abby and Connor Zgoda, and Kylee Zgoda; sisters Susan Burgoyne of TX, Valarie Zgoda of Hastings, MN; father-in-law Edward "Jim" Thomas of Hastings; also many other relatives and friends. The Funeral Service, officiated by Rev. Doug Duin will be held 11 AM Tuesday, January 17, 2012 at Our Saviour�s Ev. Lutheran Church, 400 W. Ninth St., Hastings. The visitation will be held from 4-8 PM Monday at the Caturia-Smidt Funeral Home, 201 E. Seventh St., Hastings and one hour prior to the service at church. The pallbearers are Jack Thomas, Tom Fox, Sonny Eischens, Jim Hoeschen, Brad Haese, Dick Murtaugh, Ron Wolff, and Lloyd Schaffer.
