Joan Shirley Valentine

Joan S. Valentine, age 80 of Hastings, died peacefully on Sunday, August 7, 2016, at her daughters home in Hastings following an extended illness. Joan Shirley, the daughter of James and Florence (Ask) Nelson, was born on July 14, 1936 in Winona. Following her education, Joan was united in marriage to Patrick Valentine on June 19, 1954 in Winona and they resided in Minneapolis. She was a longtime Minneapolis Postal Clerk prior to her retirement. Joan formerly liked fishing and camping, and especially enjoyed spending time with family. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Patrick on March 25, 1988; and by her son, Patrick John. Joan is survived by her children, Paul Valentine, Laurie Valentine, Anita (Dale) Traynor, Jennifer May, Christine Zenk and Brian (Kelly) Valentine; her 14 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren; her siblings, Mary Votruba and Robert Votruba; also by many other relatives and friends. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, August 11, 2016 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 2035 West Fifteenth St., Hastings, with visitation from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m., also at church. Interment will follow at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis. Pallbearers are Bradley Traynor, Daniel Wever, Jason May, Michael Voit, Patrick Valentine and Sean Traynor. Arrangements are being completed by Caturia-Smidt Funeral Home Cremation Services in Hastings.
