Joan F. Bernt

May 3, 1933 — May 14, 2022

Joan F. Bernt (O’Brien), age 89, of Rosemount, passed away surrounded by her family on May 14, 2022. Joan was born on May 3rd 1933 in Superior, Wisconsin to Frank and Elsie O’Brien. She graduated from Loyola High School in Mankato in 1951 after previously attending Cathedral High School in Superior, Wisconsin where she was an honorary graduate. Joan inspired many by her strong Catholic faith. Many prayers have been answered throughout the years due to her intercession. Joan was employed by First American Bank in Duluth for many years before opening Cogwheel Crafts, and later, the Strawberry Patch Consignment Gift Shop. She also worked as a bookkeeper for the Ski Hut. In retirement, she worked part-time as a receptionist at Saint Ann’s Residence. She shared her time and talent with others by volunteering at Regina Senior Living and Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Church in Hastings and St. Michael’s Church in Duluth. Joan was a wonderful baker. Her fresh cinnamon rolls, homemade bread, blueberry muffins and angel food cakes were enjoyed by many. She had the gift of hospitality and welcomed many guests into her home through the years, always serving a hot cup of coffee accompanied by scrumptious food and lively conversation. Her penchant for interior decorating could be seen in the antiques, artwork, stained glass and beautiful floral arrangements that adorned her home. Joan cherished her family and friends and will be greatly missed by many. She was preceded in death by her parents Frank and Elsie; granddaughter, Jordan Bernt; and sister, Jacqueline Chavez. Joan is survived by her husband, John “Jack"; children, Mary (Mike) Mischke and Michael (Melissa) Bernt; grandchildren, Bryan and Claudia Mischke, and Jayden Bernt; brothers, Patrick (Marcia) O'Brien, Gregory (Sherry) O'Brien; sisters, Julie (Tom) Murnan, Mary Tyrrell, and Teresa Sham; and many other relatives and friends. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday May 24, 2022 at 11:00 am at the Church of St. Peter, 1405 Sibley Memorial Highway, Mendota Heights.
