James "Jim" Mayer

James H. "Jim" Mayer, age 90 of Hastings, died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, May 22, 2018. James was born September 28, 1927 in Hastings to Christian and Sophie (Schick) Mayer. He graduated with the Hastings High School Class of 1945, where he was an athlete in both basketball and football. He served his country in the U. S. Army during WWII and received his honorable discharge in 1947. Jim married Virginia Bloomstrand on May 1, 1951 in South Dakota and was a longtime employee at King Midas, Peavey, and Con-Agra Mill in Hastings, retiring as a foreman in 1989. He was Past Commander of the American Legion Post 47 and was active with the Hastings Alumni Association for many years. Jim was a faithful blood donor and community volunteer. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Virginia in 2013; and his siblings Fred, Elsie, Lorraine, Sophie, Trudy, Hedwig and Wilfred. Jim is survived by his daughters, Deb (David) Olson and Susan (Gary) Thompson; sons, Jeff (Mary Kay) Mayer, James Mayer Jr., Tim (Vicky) Mayer, Ken Mayer and David (Christina) Mayer; twelve grandchildren, Dennis, Melissa, Sonja, Sam, Matthew, Jenny, Heather, Chris, Tammy, Jonathan, Jessica and Audrey Grace; seven great grandchildren, Breanna, Nikolai, Lani, Bradley, Lucas, Owen, Joshua; a sister, Dorothy Pasch and by other relatives and many friends. The Memorial Service will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, June 9, 2018 at Our Saviours Lutheran Church, 400 Ninth Street West in Hastings, with Reverend Doug Duin officiating. Visitation will be held at church one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in Lakeside Cemetery in Hastings, with Military Honors provided by the Hastings VFW Lyle Russell Post #1210 and American Legion Post #47. Arrangements are being completed by Caturia, Smidt Starkson Funeral Home Crematory of Hastings.
