Howard W. Akins

Howard W. Akins, age 86 of Hastings died September 13, 2014 at the Regina Senior Living Facility. Howard was born May 5, 1928 in Mingo, IA to Chauncy and Myrna (Harter) Akins and was a graduate of Mingo High School. He married Margaret Rosa on August 14, 1949 in Chariton, IA and he farmed early in his working life and then worked with his brother in the electrical and plumbing industry. Howard was a member of both the Masons and the Eastern Star in Hastings. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Dewey and sister Norma Jean Schmidt. Howard is survived by his wife Margaret; children James (Terri) Akins of Pleasant Hill, IA, Donald (Donna) Akins of Baxter, IA, Bruce (Sherry) Akins of Hastings, Jane Akins of CT and Julia Akins of Eden Prairie, MN; five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren; sister Verna Scott of Beaufort, SC; also nieces, nephews and many friends. The Funeral Service, officiated by Rev. Christopher Kneen will be held 11 AM Saturday, September 20 at the Hastings United Methodist Church, 615 West Fifteenth St., Hastings with visitation held one hour prior to service at church. A Masonic Service will be held at 9:30 AM. Private interment will be held at Restland Cemetery in Baxter, IA. The pallbearers are Jim, Don, Bruce, Todd and Tyler Akins. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to donors choice.
