Gary Roger Woodward

It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of Gary R. Woodward, age 71, who died peacefully on Sunday, July 27, 2025 at his home. He was born the son of Roger and Barbara in Saint Paul, MN. Gary grew up in Newport, graduating from Park High School of Cottage Grove in 1972, where he was an all-conference baseball pitcher. Gary attended Arizona State University and Saint John’s University. He worked in the surety bond industry for his entire career. Gary’s life was marked by compassion and strength through many years of illness and an unwavering faith in Jesus. He had a lifelong passion for boating on the Saint Croix River and playing sports that brought him great joy, especially when playing alongside his children.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Roger and Barbara. Gary is survived by wife of 49 years, Marilyn; son, Derek; daughter, Ashley (Eric) Speck; two sisters, DeeAnn Knox and Linda Cashman; nephews, cousins, many other relatives, and friends.

A private family interment will be held in Cottage Grove Cemetery. Arrangements are with Starkson Family Life Celebration Chapel.
