Garland H. Green, age 75 of Hastings, passed away peacefully on Sunday afternoon, November 26, 2017, at Woodbury Health Care Center following an extended illness. Garland Herbert, the son of Garland and Velva (Breivig) Green, was born on October 22, 1942, in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Following his education at Fall Creek High School, Garland began his career in public safety. He started in Milwaukee in the 1960s, later worked in Whitehall, and eventually in Cadott, where he served as the Chief of Police. Even after retirement, Garland continued working as a security officer. On April 6, 1985, Garland was united in marriage to Bonnie Cook. Garland thoroughly enjoyed genealogy and was the go-to person in his family for history. He was a self-taught tattoo artist, a volunteer in the Civil Air Patrol and the Coast Guard Auxiliary, and a Civil War re-enactor. With his love for the Civil War, Garland owned the Post Exchange Store where he enjoyed meeting others that had the same interest. During the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Garland tirelessly spent many hours volunteering with FEMA. With the help of many family members and friends, Garland would have celebrated 29 years of sobriety on December 1st. He was preceded in death by his parents, and by his brother, Paul Green in 1993. Garland is survived by his wife, Bonnie of Hastings; his children, Audine (Michael) Lambert, Garland (Imane) Green, Pamela (Tom) Mueller, and Jason (Jeanette) Hall; his 11 grandchildren; his siblings, Dennis (Linda) Green, Carole Green, Dale (Juanita) Green, Raymond (Teresa) Green, Richard (Wendi) Green, and Audrey Green; and by many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. A Celebration of Garlands Life will be held with a gathering of family and friends from 2-5 p.m. Saturday, December 2, 2017 in the Community Room at the Valley Manor Apartment Complex, 1000 Lyn Way in Hastings, MN 55033.Arrangements are being completed by Caturia-Smidt Funeral Home Cremation Services of Hastings.
