Eugene "Gene" Reuter, age 76 of Hastings, died peacefully on Thursday morning, April 26, 2018, at United Hospital in St. Paul. Eugene Paul, the son of Greg and Ruth (Brennen) Reuter, was born at home on June 17, 1941, and surprised everyone at a weight of thirteen pounds. Gene attended Hastings High School and graduated as Class President of the class of 1959, and continued his education at various community colleges for construction management. Gene also enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and proudly served his country. On February 17, 1968, Gene was united in marriage to Sharon Kane at Guardian Angels Catholic Church. They were blessed with their son Brian, and later divorced. Gene was a longtime construction foreman. After his marriage to Sharon, they moved to Washington D.C. where he oversaw many significant projects such as: the Beltway, Metro Subway System, Jefferson Plaza, and the first land transportation of a Nuclear Reactor. He then returned back home and worked in road construction for many years. Gene later purchased Waste Masters from Kenny Denn and held the commercial waste contract for the City of Hastings. He enjoyed the many friendships he gained as he grew the business before selling it to Hillcrest Sanitation. Following his retirement, he enjoyed keeping busy by working at Menards, Spectro Alloys, and Emerald Greens Golf Course. We all knew Gene never missed a game of cards, or a cup of coffee with friends. He could often times be found at the Hastings Senior Center playing euchre, cribbage, 500, dominos, or whatever was on the schedule for the day. For many years, Gene also enjoyed volunteering his time being the captain of "Lets Go Fishing" and the Board of Directors, both through the Senior Center. He enjoyed golfing, attending flee markets to collect many things, and traveling, especially to Cabo and the Gulf. Gene was a proud member of AA, and recently celebrated fourteen years of sobriety. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Tom, John, Roger, and Jeffrey; and by his brother-in-law, John Mathews. Gene is survived by his son, Brian Reuter; grandson, Brady Reuter; siblings, Claire Mathews, Donald (Mary T.) Reuter, and Bill Reuter; former wife, Sharon Reuter; former daughter-in-law, Shawn Biskupski; sister-in-law, Pat Reuter; and by many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 3, 2018, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Hastings, with Father David Hennen officiating. Interment with Military Honors provided by Hastings VFW Lyle Russell Post 1210 will follow at the parish cemetery. Visitation will be held 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at Caturia, Smidt Starkson Funeral Home Crematory of Hastings, and will continue at church from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. on Thursday morning.
