Edward "Mike" Schommer

Edward P. "Mike" Schommer, age 81, of Hastings, died Friday, March 15, 2013 at his home.Mike was born June 21, 1931 in Hastings to Edward J. and Margaret A. (Fuchs) Schommer. He graduated from Hastings High School in 1951. He entered the Army National Guard and was deployed to Korea where he was wounded in action and was awarded the purple heart. He married Shirley Freiermuth on September 8, 1956 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Miesville. Mike was a retired postal worker and school bus driver. He was a Knights of Columbus member and a member of the Hastings VFW and American Legion Clubs. Mike carried a passion for family, sports and the Hastings community.Mike was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers Bernard, Leonard and Ray, 2 sisters Margaret Ann and Betty and grandchildren Jonathan and Jordan. He is survived by his wife Shirley, a son Jeff, daughters Renee (Dwight) Keene of Hastings, Roxanne (Kevin) Lutz of Lakeville, Michelle (Jerry) Otto of Hastings, Char (Mike) King of Hastings and Lynn (Earl) Carlson of Hastings. He is also survived by grandchildren Jesse, Abby and Luke Keene, Jennifer, Michael and Sarah Lutz, Anna Bombard, Eric Otto, Justin and Alyssa King, Nick, Kayla and Jake Carlson, and 6 great grandchildren; siblings Robert (Sandy) Schommer, Ron (Ruth) Schommer, William (Marilyn) Schommer, Rita Fasbender, Joan Jacobsen, Lorraine Husting and Millie Hovde.A visitation will be held Monday, March 18, 2013 from 4:00-8:00 PM at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 2035 Fifteenth Street West in Hastings and 1 hour prior to the funeral on Tuesday. The Funeral Mass officiated by Fr. Jim Perkl will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, March 19, 2013 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery with military honors provided by the Hastings VFW Lyle Russell Post #1210. Memorials are preferred to the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish or Hastings Family Service. The pallbearers are Jesse Keene, Luke Keene, Michael Lutz, Eric Otto, Justin King, Nick Carlson, Jacob Carlson and Abby Keene.
