Delia B. Novak, age 96 of Hastings died peacefully October 8, 2009 at the Regina Medical Center inHastings. Delia Bridgett was born September 3, 1913 in Corskeagh, Mayo Abbey, County Mayo, Ireland to Edward and Mary (Brett) Murphy. Shewas a lieutenent in theArmy Nurse Corps during WWII, serving in north Africa and Italy. She won a bronze star for her service.Delia married Joseph V. Novak on September 8, 1945 in St. Louis, MO.She was well known in the Hastings community for operating theHastings Nursing homefor 30 years. She gave many young women the opportunity for employment while learning the skills for a nursing career. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Joe. Delia is survived by her 6 children, Kate (Al Denson) Novak of Boston, MA, Thomas Novak of Hastings, Maureen (Gene) Nelson of St. Paul, Dr. Kevin (Marie) Novak of Erie, PA, John Novak of Hastings, and Patrick Novak of Miami, FL; also her 9 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. The funeral mass, officiated by Fr. James Perkl will be held at 10am Tuesday, October 13, 2009at the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 2035 West Fifteenth St., Hastings. Interment, with military honors provided by the Hastings VFW Lyle Russell Post #1210 will follow in the parish cemetery. Her four sons will serve as pallbearers. Visitation will be held from 5-7pm Monday at the Caturia-Smidt Funeral Home, 201 E. 7th St., Hastings and one hour prior to the Tuesday service at the church.The family would like to thank Lis and Gustavo from Health East, and Kathy Demarre, her home health aid for the wonderful care they gave our mother.
