David "Dave" Dreis

David “Dave” James Dreis, age 66 of Hastings, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones at home on Monday evening, November 10, 2025, after fighting an 18 month long battle with cancer.

Dave was a hardworking man with a heart as big as his laugh. For over 30 years, he owned and operated his local fencing company, pouring his pride and craftsmanship into every job he took on. A true handyman, Dave loved nothing more than a good project—especially when it was done his way. He officially retired just two years ago, though his mind was never far from a toolbelt or a fresh idea. He had a deep love for his dogs, especially his loyal Doberman, Karter, who passed just two weeks before him. The two were inseparable companions, and there’s comfort in knowing they’re back together again. Whether he was playing Barbies, getting his makeup done, or laughing at their silly antics, Dave found endless happiness in watching his grandchildren grow into their goofy, bright personalities—shaped in no small part by his own warmth and humor.

Dave’s greatest joy was his family. He cherished every moment spent with his wife, Laura Chapin; his stepdaughters, Chelsee (Lauren) Chapin and Natalee Chapin; and his beloved granddaughters, Harvest and Meera. Dave is also survived by his siblings, Ken (Linda) Warner, Mike (Donna) Dreis, Tom (Vickie) Dreis, Beverly Piedmont, Sharon (Randy) Pederson, and Jim Dreis; along with many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends who will miss him dearly.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Othmar and Kathryn Dreis; sisters, Sandy Kahl, Irene Grubb, and Terri Snabb; brother, Bob Dreis; and his faithful dog, Karter.

Dave will be remembered for his work ethic, his laughter, his stubborn streak that came from a place of love, and his ability to make any space—whether a job site, a family gathering, or a grandkids’ tea party—a little brighter just by being there.

Celebration of Dave's Life will be held 11:30 a.m. Monday, November 17, 2025, at Starkson Family Life Celebration Chapel in Hastings.

Family and friends are cordially invited to a visitation from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m., and to a reception immediately following the service, all at the funeral home on Monday.
