Brenda Swanson

February 11, 1949 — May 21, 2022

Brenda Swanson, 73, of Hastings passed away on May 21, 2022, at the Pillars in Oakdale with family by her side, after many years battling with Alzheimer's. Brenda was born February 11, 1949 to John and Elaine (Aadalen) McRae in Red Wing, Minnesota. She attended and graduated from Red Wing High School with the class of 1967. After high school, Brenda attended Winona State University where she studied German and Education. As a freshman at Winona, she met Al Swanson and on Jan 2, 1971 they were married and moved to the Swanson family farm south of Hastings. Brenda and Al started their life together living in a classic baby blue trailer house for eight years. Through hard work together and sacrifice, they were able to rebuild the family farmhouse, raise hundreds of cattle, thousands of turkeys, two boys, two girls, and build three golf courses. An abandoned dog named Cody also became a big part of the family for many years as the family grew. Brenda enjoyed shopping when she found time, especially looking for a good deal. When that good deal was found, she would be sure to purchase enough so that everyone would benefit from her efforts. Brenda loved nothing more than giving of herself and her possessions. Brenda was generous to everyone throughout her life. Her kind spirit and love was felt by many. Her grandchildren brought her great joy and were loved and supported in many ways. Family time at the cabin in Wisconsin by one of the family's golf courses was cherished. Brenda and her family and friends enjoyed many years taking advantage of a time share in Cancun, Mexico. Her calendar on both her computer and Ipad had the countdown to vacation app long before it was mainstream. She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Al; children, Jason (Lisa) Swanson, Brad (Brianna) Swanson, Denise (Brian) Dodge, Nicole (James Rondeau) Swanson; grandchildren, Trey Swanson, Ryan Swanson, Taylor Dodge and Cooper Dodge; siblings, Bill (Jill) McRae, Bob McRae; niece Allison McRae; nephew Andy McRae; niece, Jessica (Matt) Kohner and many dear friends and relatives. Brenda was preceded in death by her parents. Visitation will be 4:00 - 7:00 pm Thursday, May 26 at the Starkson Family Life Celebration Chapel in Hastings. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 am Friday, May 27 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, with visitation one hour prior at the church. Interment will be in the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Cemetery. Starkson Family Life Celebration Chapel is assisting the family.
