Roger J. Schmitt

Roger J. Schmitt, age 66 of Hastings, died Tuesday, December 2, 2014 at the VA Hospital in Minneapolis. Roger John was born January 29, 1948 in Hastings to Donald and Mary "Betty" (Heschke) Schmitt. He attended Hastings High School and graduated with the class of 1966. He continued his education at Mankato State for a brief time and then enlisted in the U.S. Army. Following his honorable discharge, he worked at various locations throughout the area, mostly at Jacques Seed. On August 30, 2014, he was united in marriage to Pamela Durst. Roger was a handyman and enjoyed helping out in any way. He also enjoyed camping, cooking, fishing, boating, joking and telling stories. Roger always had a twinkle in his eye and loved spending time with his friends and family. He was preceded in death by his parents and son Jonathon. Roger is survived by his wife Pamela; children Sarah (Joel) Molitor and Shannon Tarr; his grandchildren, Isaac and Charlie; his great granddaughter, ToriAnn; his brother, Pat (Jane) Schmitt; and by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. The Memorial Service, officiated by Gordon Gathright will be held 11:45 a.m. Saturday, December 6, with a memorial gathering from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at Caturia-Smidt Funeral Home Cremation Services, 201 East Seventh Street, Hastings. A private family interment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memories are preferred to Hastings Family Service, the American Cancer Society, or to donors choice in memory of Roger.
