Robert Bob McCormick, age 94 of Hastings, formerly of St. Charles, Illinois, died peacefully on Saturday, December 31, 2016, at Regina Senior Living in Hastings. Robert was born on November 27, 1922, in Chicago, Illinois. He attended Waller High School in Chicago. During World War II, Robert served in the US Army Air Corps at Alconbury Air Base near the village of Godmanchester, England, where he met and married the love of his life, Gwynneth Clifton. After the war, Robert attended the Chicago Institute of Technology on the GI Bill where he earned a degree in Architectural Engineering. He worked in the construction industry until he retired at age 70. Robert enjoyed playing golf, puttering around the house and going out for breakfast with friends and family. He was a long-time member of the VFW. Robert was an accomplished artist who painted in watercolors and built models of houses and airplanes from wood. Robert was preceded in death by his parents and his three older brothers, John Bud, Tom and Frank Frannie McCormick. Robert is survived by his wife of 71 years, Gwynneth; daughter, Pamela McCormick (Thomas) Sullivan of Hastings; son, Steven (Sidney) McCormick of Geneva, IL; grandsons, Matthew Sullivan and Andrew (Christine) McCormick and a great-grandson, Hudson McCormick. A private family service will be held in Illinois at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Salvation Army, where, as Robert frequently said, a soldier could always get a free cup of coffee and a donut.
