Rainer "Spud" Kimmes

December 30, 1926 — September 7, 2018

Rainer "Spud" Kimmes, age 91 of Marshan Township, died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Friday evening, September 7, 2018. Spud lived and worked his entire life on the family farm. Rainer Alexander, the son of Mathias and Anna (Rech) Kimmes, was born on December 30, 1926. Spud attended parochial school through eighth grade, and was later drafted into the United States Army at the end of WWII. Spud was united in marriage to Rita Doffing on August 24, 1957, and they were blessed with forty-five years of marriage and a wonderful family. Spud was a farmer at heart, and loved driving the countryside even up to his final days. He also enjoyed spending time with family on the pontoon, fishing, hunting, and snowmobiling. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Rita on September 29, 2002; sisters, Marcelline, Theresa and Elizabeth Kimmes; brothers, Arthur, Ernest, Leander, Herbert, Alois, and John Kimmes; great grandchild, Chandler Selby. Spud is survived by his children, Brenda Kimmes, Denise (Jerry) Kranz, Ann (Paul) Myers, Lori (Mark) Stoffel, Rodney (Lori) Kimmes, Bryce (Donna) Kimmes, and Sue (Jon) Meyer; grandchildren, Jaci (Ryan) Hansey, Alex (Holly) Kranz, Brian Stoffel, Andy (Amanda) Myers, Jason Stoffel, Amy (Matt) Selby, Megan Myers, Cassidy Meyer, Brooke Kimmes, Emily Meyer, William Meyer, Kalli Kimmes, Rylee Kimmes, and Bree Kimmes; great grandchildren, Troy and Leah Hansey, Isla and Casey Kranz, and Tallulah Selby; sister, Margaret (Dick) Matsch; sisters-in-law, Marilyn Rother and Louise Kimmes; and by many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 12 Noon Tuesday, September 11, 2018, at St. Marys Catholic Church in New Trier, with Father Michael Tix officiating. Spud will be laid to rest next to Rita at the parish cemetery. Family and friends are cordially invited to a visitation from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday evening at Caturia, Smidt Starkson Funeral Home Crematory of Hastings, and also from 10:30 a.m. to Noon at church on Tuesday morning. In lieu of flowers, Spuds family requests memorials be directed to the St. Marys Catholic Church Building Improvement Fund in his memory. Spuds family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff from Morning Glory Home Care and to Mayo Hospice for the love and care they provided. Arrangements are being completed by Caturia, Smidt Starkson Funeral Home Crematory of Hastings.
