Mildred Hiniker Wieners, age 103, of Hastings died Wednesday, February 1, 2017 at the Heart to Home in Mendota Heights, MN. Mildred Hiniker was born to Catherine (Niedere) and Jacob Hiniker in Hastings, MN at the family home at Sixth and Pine Streets on May 22, 1913. She was the fourth of five children. She had one brother, Jim Hiniker, three sisters, Marie Hiniker, Ceil Hiniker and Florence Hiniker Hughes. Milly completed elementary school at St. Boniface and graduated from Hastings High School in 1931. She was a proud graduate of Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa in 1935, with a B.A.in Food and Nutrition. She was a member of the Alpha Gamma Delta sorority. She worked initially as a dietitian at Abbott Hospital in Minneapolis and then years later as a dietitian at Hastings State Hospital for 15 years. She returned to the college environment at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis and in 1941 received a B.A.in Home Economics. This led to teaching positions in home economics at Bemidji and Washburn High Schools. Milly married Joseph Wieners, who was a classmate in grade school, on July 30, 1946 at St. Boniface Catholic Church. Together they raised seven children, Joe, John, Kate, Mary, Betty, Marge and Barb. Mildred had many interests and hobbies. She was a member of several card clubs and a charter member of the Hastings Garden Club. Her interests included flower gardening, cooking, sewing, traveling, poetry, tennis and spending time with family and friends. She was a devoted and active life-long member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church and its predecessor, St. Boniface. In her last several years, she enjoyed and benefited enormously from the friendships developed with numerous volunteers and caregivers. Mildred is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her four siblings. She is survived by her children Joe (Sharon) Wieners of Kasson, MN, Kate (Charlie) Yenni of Mendota Heights, MN, John (Vicki Bedford) Williams of Ogden, UT, Mary (Bill) Troumbly of Coleraine, MN, Betty (Isa) Canavati of Ft. Wayne, IN, Marge Wieners (Tim Conlan) of Arlington, VA and Barb Wieners (Ben Cherryhomes) of Hastings; she is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren, also by many other relatives and friends. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Noon on Saturday, February 4, 2017 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church; 2035 West Fifteenth Street, Hastings, MN, officiated by Father David Hennen. Visitation will be held from 10:30 a.m. until time of Mass. Interment will take place in the parish cemetery. The family would like to thank the many caregivers and volunteers for their care and friendship for the last several years. Memorials may be given to MN Horticulture Society or a local charity of the donors choice.
