LeRoy "Speed" Thyen, age 87 of Hastings, died peacefully on Friday, November 25, 2016, at Augustana Care of Hastings. LeRoy L. Thyen was born December 27, 1928 at Richmond, MN to Benedict and Elizabeth (Reitmeier) Thyen. He attended St. Johns University in Collegeville, MN. He was an excellent baseball player in the town ball leagues around Richmond, where he earned his nickname of "Speed" for his base running prowess. He married Angeline "Angie" Schmidt on October 30, 1954 in Richmond. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was retired from Dakota County Abstract Co. in Hastings. Speed was a devoted community volunteer and earned volunteer of the year at Regina Hospital. He loved music, played the accordion and enjoyed card playing and crossword puzzles. He was preceded in death by parents, son John Thyen, sister Mary Adams. He is survived by his wife Angeline "Angie" Thyen, daughter Judy (Mike) Jordan; sisters Donna (Bob) Backes, Doris (Florian) Kalthoff; brothers Roger (Aggie) Thyen, Wallace (Darlene) Thyen; also several nieces nephews. The Funeral Mass will be held at 11 am Tuesday, 11/29 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 2035 15th St. W., Hastings. Visitation will be held Monday 11/28 from 4-7 pm at Caturia-Smidt Funeral Home, 201 7th St. E., Hastings and also 1 hour prior to funeral at church on Tuesday. Interment with military honors will be provided at the parish cemetery.
