John "Jack" Brummel, age 84 of Hastings, died peacefully on Thursday evening, May 4, 2017, at Augustana Care of Hastings, following an extended illness. John Henry, the son of Joseph and Anna (Kasel) Brummel, was born on February 26, 1933, in Hastings. Jack attended Hastings High School and graduated with the class of 1951. Following his education, Jack enlisted in the United States Air Force during the Korean War and later received an honorable discharge. On November 30, 1957, he was united in marriage to Maryann Kromrey at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Vermillion. Jack was a longtime pipefitter and member of the Steamfitters Pipefitters Local 455 Union. Jack worked at many various places, but was mainly at Koch Refinery until his retirement. He and Maryann then had the opportunity to travel both internationally as well as around the U.S. in their motorhome. Jack was a lifetime member of the VFW Lyle Russell Post 1210 and the American Legion Post 47, both in Hastings. He was also installed as the Post Commander of the Legion in 1971, and enjoyed being involved with other veterans. Jack will always be remembered as a simple and humble man who was incredibly proud of his beloved wife, children and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and by five of his ten children in infancy. Jack is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Maryann; his five children, Teresa (David) Spegal, Mark (Rita) Brummel, Laura Hansen, Michael (James) Ryan, and Peter Brummel (significant other, Ann Fryer); his grandchildren, Jeremiah (significant other, Andi) Brummel, Dennis Brummel, Audrey Brummel, Philip Spegal, Sarah Spegal, Ashley (Darrin) Kraines, Andrew Spegal, and Ben Truax; his great granddaughter, Ariel Febus; his siblings, Shirley Sura, Doris (Duane) Herman, and Joni (Mark) Kuehnel; and by many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 12, 2017, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Hastings, with Father David Hennen officiating. Private family interment with Military Honors provided by the Hastings VFW Lyle Russell Post 1210 will be held at St. John the Baptist Parish Cemetery in Vermillion. Visitation will be held from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. at church, with a reception following the Mass at church. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, Total Life Care Center of Hastings, Feed My Starving Children, or to the donors choice in memory of Jack. Arrangements are being completed by Caturia-Smidt Funeral Home Cremation Services of Hastings.
