Joan Helen Courneya

Joan H. Courneya, age 72 of Hastings, died Tuesday, March 15, 2016 at Regina Medical Center, Hastings. Joan Helen, the daughter of John and Mary (Ridzik) Pasicznyk, was born on September 23, 1943 in Minneapolis. Following her schooling at Holy Angels, Joan attended beauty school and worked as a hairdresser for a short time. On September 26, 1964, she was united in marriage to David Courneya at St. Austin Catholic Church in Minneapolis and was blessed with eight children. Joan then became a homemaker for fifteen years and raised her family. She then began working at Smeads in Hastings, where she retired after thirty years of employment. Joan loved playing bingo, going to the casino, spending time at her camper, watching football (especially the Vikings), crocheting, playing cards and fishing. She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her grandson, Jacques; her brother, Richard; and by her husband, David in 2013. Joan is survived by her children, Denise (Dick) Becker, Joe (Kris) Courneya, Jeannie Leeson (Tony Osier), Troy Courneya, Tammy (Michael) Conery, Tina (Dan) Bradford, Linda Courneya and Paul (Debra) Courneya; her thirteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren; her twin sister, Joyce Fusenig and sister, Dolores (Mannie) Lambert; and by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 a.m. Friday, March 18, 2016 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 2035 West Fifteenth St., Hastings, with Father David Hennen officiating. Visitation will be held at the church for one hour prior to Mass on Friday. Private family interment will be held at the parish cemetery at a later date.Arrangements are being completed by Caturia-Smidt Funeral Home Cremation Services in Hastings.
