Janet M. Grosse, age 69 of Hastings, died peacefully following a recent stroke on Friday afternoon, December 4, 2020, at United Hospital in St. Paul. Janet Marie, the daughter of George H. and Rosemary (Fitzgerald) Marthaler, was born on January 30, 1951, in West St. Paul. She attended West St. Paul Schools prior to transferring to Rosemount where she graduated with the class of 1969. Janet then continued her education and nursing, a career that was perfect for her caring nature. On October 5, 1974, Janet was united in marriage to Larry Grosse in Red Wing. Janet began her nursing career in Red Wing for a brief time until she and Larry farmed until 1983. She then worked at Augustana Care in Hastings, later Dakota County Detox, and retired in 2014 from the VA Medical Center after working there for twenty-seven years. In their retirement years, Janet and Larry enjoyed wintering in Arizona and cherished the many friendships they made along the way. Janet was a devout Catholic, and allowed her faith to guide her life. She was a talented quilter, gardener, and loved working in her yard. No matter where she went, Janet made many new friendships with the people she would meet. She was a second mother to many, and would do just about anything for someone in need. Most of all, Janet cherished the time she spent with family, especially her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Kathleen Peine and George J. Marthaler; brother-in-law, Kevin Dodge; niece, Lisa Marthaler; brother-in-law, Chuck Dougherty; father-in-law, Robert Grosse; and by her great nieces, Sydney Wagner and Scarlet Wagner. Janet is survived by her husband, Larry; children, Larry Grosse II, Robert (Thea) Grosse, Lori (Jeremy) Jacobson, and Katie (Mike) Burley; grandchildren, Benjamin Bailey, Ashton Grosse, Kelsey Jacobson, Lucyana DeWitt, Charlotte Burley, and Ezra Burley; siblings, Dennis (Marilyn) Marthaler, Rosemary Dougherty, Nancy Dodge, Debra Marthaler, Pamela (John) Wagner, Mary (Roy) Schneider, and James (Yvette) Marthaler; brother-in-law, Jerry Peine and sister-in-law, JoAnn Marthaler; mother-in-law, Marilyn Grosse; sisters-in-law, Beverly (Jerry) Stevens and Becky (Fred) Plaas; and by many nieces, nephews, other family members, and good friends. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, December 11, 2020, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Hastings, with Father David Hennen officiating.
