Harold Philip Featherstone, age 92, of Hastings, passed away at Regions Hospital on March 31, 2016. He survived seven kids along with numerous grand and great grandchildren. He enjoyed reading, loved trees and gardening, and was seldom seen without his dog, Buddy and a pipe. He tried to do justice, love and mercy, and walk humbly with his God. He was quietly active in civic affairs; he believed in serving his community and the people in it. He took active interest and worked with many others on most of the committees for the City of Hastings for years. He was diligently involved in the American political process to include his political party. He was keen on affordable housing and was pleased to see the Habitat Affordable Housing at Highway 55 & Pleasant completed some 15 years after the Hastings Housing Coalition started work. As a professional engineer, he worked as program, project, system and design engineer. He was most comfortable as a design engineer. His tasks covered re-entry vehicles, satellites, aircraft secondary power, aircraft bearings & seals, controls and electric cabling. As a SAE committee member, he introduced split damped contacts and vibration resistant coupling and wrote its military specifications. He thought this was his most significant design effort. He also wrote design practices for bearing and electric cables. He was a kind, but gruff, man who cared very much for his family, friends and neighbors. He will be missed. A Memorial Service, officiated by Pastor Gordon Gathright, will be held Thursday (4/7) at 11:00 a.m. at Wise Family Funeral Home, 400 Spring Street, Hastings. A gathering will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment with military honors, Fort Snelling National Cemetery. The Wise Family Funeral Home is serving the family.
