Frank R. Oertel, age 83 of Hastings, died Friday, December 29, 2016, at Regina Senior Living. Frank was born May 16, 1933, in Newark, NJ to Adolph and Eva (King) Oertel. He served in the U.S. Navy from January of 1951 until June of 1955 and married Carol Leibner on August 18, 1956. He worked as a pipe fitter at Flint Hills Refinery. Frank loved to golf, and enjoyed bowling and playing softball. He was Volunteer of the Year at Regina in 2003 and greatly enjoyed watching his grandchildren play sports. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Emily Mercker, Margaret May; and a brother, James Oertel. Frank is survived by his wife Carol; children, Peggy (Colen) Willard, Barbara (Jeff) Petersen and Thomas Oertel; grandchildren Jordan Brown, Alec Brown, Marianne Oertel and Charlie Oertel; step grandchildren, Brittany (Ivan) Trushin, Ryan Petersen and Seth Petersen;siblings, William Oertel, Anna Kiss, Mary Jacintho, Thomas Oertel and Alice Thompson; also nieces, nephews, other family members and friends. Memorial Services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 4, 2017, at St. Johns Ev. Lutheran Church, 202 Eighth Street West, Hastings with Reverend Jason Thiel and Reverend Jon Zimpelmann officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at church. Interment will be held at a later date in Trinity Ev. Lutheran Church Cemetery, Wilson Township near Winona, MN. Arrangements are being completed by Caturia-Smidt Funeral Home Cremation Services of Hastings.
