Elmer G. Gunter Jr., age 87 of Hastings, died peacefully on Wednesday, January 4, 2017 at Augustana Care in Hastings. Elmer was born March 18, 1929 in Hastings to Elmer Sr. and Frances (Rosenski) Gunter. He was a Hastings High School graduate, class of 1947 and served in the US Air Force in Guam during the Korean War. Elmer married Wanda Rothove on September 17, 1950 in San Antonio, TX and had worked in the flour milling industry for 43 years prior to his retirement from Con Agra. He was a quiet yet strong man whose family meant everything to him. Elmer especially loved watching his grandchildren play sports. He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Nick Gunter and sisters, Maxine Pasch and Lorraine Schneider. Elmer is survived by his wife, Wanda; children, Rick (Lou Ann), Gary (Sue), Dave (Diane), Elmer "John" (Linda), Tim (special friend, Julie Brunsberg), Kathy (George) Meyers, Mark (Char), Lori (Wayne) Hicks, Steve (Yvonne) Gunter and Cheryl (Gary) Regenscheid; 22 grandchildren and 32 great grandchildren; also nieces, nephews and friends. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, January 9, 2017, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 2035 Fifteenth St. West, Hastings, with Father T.J. McKenzie officiating. Military Honors will be provided by the Hastings VFW Lyle Russell Post #1210 following the Mass at church. Interment will be held in the parish cemetery at a later date. Visitation will be held from 3-5 p.m. Sunday at Caturia-Smidt Funeral Home Cremation Services, 201 Seventh St. East, Hastings and one hour prior to Mass at church.
