Dorothy “Kathy” Roemer, age 79, of Hastings, passed away at Regina Senior Living on February 27, 2017. Kathy was born November 30,1937 in Winona, MN to Dr. and Mrs. H.J. Roemer. When her father was called into military service in the South Pacific, the family relocated to San Diego, CA where she attended elementary school. Her father became ill, forcing the family back to western Minnesota where her grandparents resided, then ultimately back to Winona. Kathy graduated with a Bachelorette Degree in Nursing from University of Minnesota. She practiced as a critical care nurse, specializing in cardiology and perioperative cardiovascular care with the National Institutes of Health in Washington, DC as well as medical centers in Fort Worth, TX and Minneapolis, MN. A dedicated professional, Kathy always knew she was born to serve the needs of others. Upon retiring to Hastings in 1999, she continued to work in homecare and end of life care. Socially, Kathy enjoyed Broadway musicals, art shows, and traveling with members of her graduating class of fellow nurses. She was committed to maintaining relationships with her friends and family; attending their events and celebrating their achievements. Always a Gopher, Kathy was an avid hockey fan: a season ticket holder. She had a passion for animals, always volunteering to foster one’s pet to avoid their confinement and isolation when owners were out of town. The second of four children, Kathy is survived by her siblings Mary Joan Orlowske-Lindner, Winter Park, FL, Jim (Donna) Roemer, Golden Valley, MN, and Peggy (Mike) Jenson, Hastings, MN. She is also survived by niece Lissa (Jon) Stratton, Orlando, FL, nephew Stephen (Tiffany) Roemer, Maple Grove, MN, and niece Krista (Bill) Cavanaugh-Szlaius, Lewisville, TX, grandnephews Matthew, Steven, William, Maxwell, grandnieces Veronica, and Serena. The family wishes to thank the caring and dedicated staff of Oakridge Assisted Living and Regina Transitional Care Unit for their kind attention. A memorial service, officiated by Father Thomas O'Brien, will be held on Saturday, June 3, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. at the Wise Family Funeral & Cremation Services, 400 Spring Street in Hastings. A gathering will be one hour prior to the service. There will be a lunch following the mass.
