David D. Marshall "Dave", age 66 of Denmark Township (Hastings) died on September 12, 2016 with his loving wife and children at his side. David, the son of Dwain C. and Delores (Pykoski) Marshall was born April 10, 1950 in St. Paul, MN. David grew up in Denmark Township farming with his father and then his own land for years. Following graduation from Hastings High School, he went on to study machining, welding and other metal and mechanical trades at the Faribault Area Vocational Technical College. Throughout his career, David worked in various positions that allowed him to utilize his talents and skills with metal, starting at the steel mill in Newport, MN; then at Domain Industries in New Richmond, WI; D.C. Agricultural Lime of Hastings and at Afton Alps/Vail Ski and Golf Area for 30 years. Dave was considered by many to be a maverick and ingenious at fabricating and repairing parts for snow cats, diesel equipment and all types of mechanical equipment at the Ski and Golf area. He built many of the bridges, rails and metal work at the now Vail Resort. He was proud of his abilities as a machinist and mechanic though he was a quiet, humble man who utilized his gifts and talents in his work and daily life without fanfare. He owned a small machine shop where he fabricated and repaired items for local farmers and others. David was united in marriage to Maureen (McCanney) Marshall on April 20, 1974 in Faribault, MN. Their three children are Chris Marshall, Aaron Marshall and Amanda Marshall. They built their home in Denmark Township and have lived there for 42 years. David was proud of being a life-long resident of Denmark Township. David helped others in any way he could. He was a life-long gardener, raising fruits, vegetables and flowers. He had a small orchard growing apples, cherries, apricots, blueberries and other fruits and nuts. Any excess produce was donated to local food shelves and friends. He sold apples at the Hastings Farmers Market for many years, especially enjoying the people and conversations about his antique apples. He loved creating yard and garden art, large metal sculptures using his machining and welding talents. Anyone who knew Dave knew he was a true outdoorsman, constantly planting different types of trees to create natural places of beauty, wind breaks, snow barriers, a park like landscape and places for small creatures to live. His forest of 15,000 trees, hand planted over time is a testament to his love of nature and his conservation efforts. He liked to spend time with his wife and children and their families, barbeque, travel, read and relax at home. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, cousins and other relatives. David is survived by his loving wife, Maureen; children, Chris (Michelle), Aaron (Kassey) and Amanda; five grandchildren; cousins and many friends. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, September 29, 2016 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 2035 Fifteenth St. West, Hastings, officiated by Fr. David Hennen.
