David D. "Dave" Berger

David D. "Dave" Berger, age 90 of Hastings, died peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Friday afternoon, March 13, 2020, at Augustana Care of Hastings. David Dean, the son of John and Alvira (Raimann) Berger, was born on April 10, 1929, in Wells, Minnesota. Following his graduation from Wells High School with the class of 1947, Dave attended River Falls and Mankato State on athletic scholarships, prior to being drafted by the United States Army. He served during the Korean War from 1952-53. Following his Honorable Discharge from the service, Dave returned to Mankato State and received his Bachelor's Degree in 1954. He later returned to Mankato State and received his Master's Degree in 1961. On April 25, 1953, Dave was united in marriage to Margaret A. Dahl in Winnebago, Minnesota. They were blessed with four children and forty-eight years of marriage prior to her passing on April 10, 2002. Dave was a longtime teacher, football and basketball coach for Jackson High School, as well as an agent for North Central Crop Insurance. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion and VFW Lyle Russell Post 1210 in Hastings, and was also an active Mason. Dave was an avid golfer throughout his life, and even had two hole-in-one's. He was also an original season ticket holder for the Minnesota Vikings. Dave enjoyed traveling, dancing, and most of all, spending time with his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother and sister-in-law, Donny (Meryl) Berger; great-niece, Jenna Dulas Scully; wife, Margaret; and his dear friend, Virginia Krier. Dave is survived by his children, Sharon Dahl Berger (Craig Hill), Karen (Dan) Barry, Steve (Holly) Berger, and Paul (Teisha) Berger; grandchildren, Samantha (Chad) Armbruster, Brady Roscoe, Nick Barry, Jon Barry, Lexy Berger, Jaden Berger, and Kyle Berger; great-grandchildren, Alex, Tessa, and Brooke Armbruster; and by nieces and nephew, Donnette (Larry) Dulas, Doreen Stiles, and Dirk (Darbie) Berger. A Celebration of Dave's Life will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday March 20, 2020, at Starkson Family Life Celebration Chapel of Hastings, with Gordon Gathright officiating. Interment with Military Honors provided by the VFW Lyle Russell Post 1210 will be held at Lakeside Cemetery in Hastings. Family and friends are cordially invited to a visitation from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home on Friday. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred in memory of Dave. Arrangements are being completed by Starkson Family Life Celebration Chapel of Hastings.
