Byron L. White, age 80 of Prairie Island, died suddenly but peacefully on Thursday morning, April 8, 2021. Byron Lewis, (Matoska) the son of Martin and Elsie (Johnson) White, was born on December 10, 1940. As a young man, Byron was an accomplished athlete, especially in basketball and baseball of which he enjoyed playing throughout his life. On September 2, 1968, he was united in marriage to Faye Cook in Kansas City, Missouri. They were blessed with two sons, Byron and Tim, and nearly fifty three years of memories together. Byron enjoyed fishing with friends and playing gospel music with the Apostolic Church. Byron also had a love for running; he even ran the Boston Marathon. While in Kansas, Byron worked with General Motors as a journeyman electrician prior to later returning to Prairie Island. He then ran for Tribal Council and successfully held the position for four years prior to transitioning into a Government Relation Specialist until his first retirement. With his dedication, Byron then joined the gaming commission where he continued to work until his final retirement at the age of 70. He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Martin, Jim, Willis, Marjorie, Elisa, Marilyn, Victoria, and Cheryl; and by his granddaughter, Andrea. Byron is survived by his wife, Faye; children, Byron (JoLynn) White and Tim White; grandchildren, Carsen, Mikaylah, Baron, Kalyani, Beau, Kazden, and Gavin; sister, Vivian Mireau; and by other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 12 Noon on Monday, April 12, 2021, at the Prairie Island Community Center in Welch. Burial will follow at the Lower Island Cemetery in Prairie Island. Family and friends are cordially invited to a visitation from 10 a.m. to 12 Noon on Monday at the Community Center. Arrangements are being completed by Starkson Family Life Celebration Chapel of Hastings.
