Bertrand D. "Bert" Goderstad, age 85 of Hastings, died peacefully following an extended illness on Sunday morning, April 26, 2020, at Prescott Nursing and Rehab. Bert, the son of Torge and Clara (Venden) Goderstad, was born on July 12, 1934, in Madison, Wisconsin. Bert's family lived in Black Earth, Wisconsin, where his father was a well-known cheese maker. Bert graduated from Black Earth High School, and continued his education at St. Olaf College in Northfield where he graduated with a degree in Economics. On June 8, 1957, Bert was united in marriage to Margaret C. Olson at Boyd Lutheran Church in Boyd, Minnesota. He was then drafted into the United States Army and later received an Honorable Discharge in 1959. Following his discharge, Bert was a Department Manager at JC Penney's in Austin, Minnesota until moving to Hastings, Minnesota where he worked for the Meyer Company. He then owned and operated Ye Old Fabric Shoppe and The Clothes Buggy in Hastings. Bert and Margaret enjoyed the opportunity to meet many new friends over the years while in business. He was also a traveling salesman for various products as well. Bert and Margaret were founding members of St.Philip's Lutheran Church. He was also a dedicated volunteer for the LeDuc Mansion, Hastings Historical Preservation Committee, Jaycee's, St. Olaf Alumni Association, and Dakota County Historical Society. Bert also loved to collect books by and about Frank Lloyd Wright. He was very intrigued with his designs and put on classes about Wright to all who would listen. He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Nels, Bertha, Charlotte, Victor, and Richard; and by his granddaughter, Amanda. Bert is survived by his wife, Margaret; son, Todd (Susan) Goderstad; grandchildren, Lindy (Michael) Waskosky and Erik (Kate) Goderstad; great grandchildren, Tristen, Elisha, Jeremiah, Jace, and Jada Waskosky; and by many other relatives and friends. Due to the current limitations with COVID-19, a Celebration of Bert's Life will be held at St. Philip's Lutheran Church at a later date. We encourage you to continue to watch our website as updated information becomes available. Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers to St. Phillips Church or St. Olaf College. Arrangements are being completed by Starkson Family Life Celebration Chapel of Hastings.
