Bernard "Barney" Ostertag

Bernard "Barney" Arnold Ostertag, age 80 of Hampton, died peacefully on Tuesday morning, February 20, 2018, at Kingsley Shores Senior Living in Lakeville. Barney was born on April 25, 1937 to Leo and Cordelia (nee Friendshuh) Ostertag at their Richfield farm. He was the fourth youngest of twelve children and was four years old when his family moved to Rosemount. Barney graduated from St. Johns Prep School, at Collegeville. He served two years in the US Army and then returned to the farm. He married Kay Ruth Thomas on June 25, 1960, at St. Josephs Catholic Church in Rosemount, where they settled on the family farm. Barney and Kay had six children and in 1972 started their company, Rosemount Cement, Inc. After retiring, Barney and Kay moved to their New Trier farm where Barney returned to farming, raising Charolais cattle and crops. He enjoyed his family, farm, and community, as well as wintering in Arizona. Barney is survived by his wife Kay; six children, Tim (Bev) Ostertag, of Prior Lake, Teresa (Paul) Marxen, of Bird Island, Andy (Starr) Ostertag, of New Trier, Chris (Kathy) Ostertag, of Shakopee, Lee (Amy) Ostertag, of Oro Valley, AZ, and Laura Ostertag, of Maplewood; seventeen grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two siblings, Liz (Marv) Vinje, of Lakeville and George (Joanne) Ostertag, of Hemet, CA; and numerous other relatives and friends. Barney was preceded in death by his parents, nine siblings, and a granddaughter. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, February 24, 2018, at St. Marys Catholic Church in New Trier. Interment will follow at the parish cemetery. Visitation will be held 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday evening at Caturia, Smidt Starkson Funeral Home Crematory in Hastings, and will continue for one hour prior to Mass at church on Saturday morning. Arrangements are being completed by Caturia, Smidt Starkson Funeral Home Crematory of Hastings.
