August "Gus" L. Heinold

June 21, 1923 — December 13, 2014

Gus went to join the love of his life Helen to celebrate Christmas together. He will be greatly missed by his loving family, many friends and all those whos lives he touched in so many ways. Gus loved his family, his country, his church and the community. He was always there reaching out his hand in fellowship. He loyally raised the American flag at Pioneer Park morning and night for many years with great pride. He was a proud veteran and life member of the VFW and Legion.Gus was born June 21, 1923 in St. Louis, MO to August L. and Louise (Meier) Heinold. He served as a Sergeant in the Unites States Army during World War II as a tank commander with the 104th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron in the European Theatre. Gus worked as purchasing director for Smead Manufacturing in Hastings, retiring after 45 years. He married Helen D. (Robinson) of Hastings November 4, 1939 and enjoyed many years of marriage until Helen passed away April 29, 2002. Gus was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years Helen, his father August L. Heinold Sr and wife Kay, his mother Louise Schoenhoff and a grandson Michael Hanek. Gus is survived by his daughters Barbara (Don) Hanek, Joyce (Marshall) Johnson and Laurie (Tom Petschauer) Fox; 4 grandchildren Jon Carlberg, Jeanice (Jim) Meier, Aaron (Ariane) Fox and Marshall (Janeen) Johnson; 12 great grandchildren Samantha and Lindsey Carlberg, Allison Hanek, Jake, Joey and Josh Meier, Adam and Helen Fox, Isaac, Grant, Nolan and Wesley Johnson and a special friend at Prescott Care Center Art Groth. A celebration of his life, officiated by Gordon Gathright will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, June 20, 2015 at Hastings United Methodist Church, 615 West Fifteenth Street, with visitation held one hour prior to the service at church. Following the service, Military Honors will be conducted by the Hastings VFW Lyle Russell Post # 1210 andheld near the flag he faithfully raised and lowered across from the church. Interment will be held at Lakeside Cemetery in Hastings.
